Guiseley 3 FC Halifax Town 0

Guiseley knocked derby rivals FC Halifax Town out of the West Riding County Cup tonight as both clubs fielded second string sides at Nethermoor.

The Lions had their former Norwich City forward Oli Johnson leading the line and he opened the scoring.

Johnson has been a peripheral figure as he recovers from a long-term injury but he looked sharp and put a second chance just wide after beating the Shaymen’s defence.

Nicky Boshell has also spent a lot of time on the bench recently and he relished getting a start. Boshell added the second, after good work from Danny Forrest, and wrapped up the scoring before half-time with a composed finish.

He had earlier set up Jack Stockdill but the youngster was denied by the Halifax keeper.

Lions boss Mark Bower took both of his goalscorers off to get more young players time on the pitch while his opposite number, Neil Aspin, took the opportunity to give himself a run-out.

Many of the Shaymen’s first choice players had been rested after their 2-0 win at Alfreton the night before which took them up to second in the Conference Premier.
