Workington 1, Guiseley 1

Guiseley failed to seal their place in the Skrill Conference North play-offs with a game to spare when they were held to a draw at already-relegated Workington.

That means the battle for the last play-off place will go down to the wire but the Lions are favourites. All they need to do is avoid a home defeat against struggling Gloucester City next Saturday.

The Lions travelled north with the intention of getting the job done at Workington but boss Mark Bower had warned his side not to take anything for granted.

There were chances at both ends in the goalless first half and the home side broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half through Godwin Abadaki. However, their lead lasted just seven minutes as Adam Boyes netted Guiseley’s equaliser.

The visitors were not able to push on and the better late chances were forced by proud Workington as they played their last home game in the Conference North - for at least a season.

Bower said: “We didn’t deserve to win the game. Our performance lacked energy, spark and quality. But it could be an important point because we obviously only need one instead of three on Saturday.”

All of the other places for the end-of-season extras were wrapped up today so it is a straight fight between Guiseley and Boston United for the last play-off berth.

Guiseley are three points above Boston but the Pilgrims have a much better goal difference.
