Leeds City 4 Otley Town 2

OTLEY Town's first team gave Premier Division leaders Leeds City an almighty scare at the weekend, taking an early lead before succumbing 4-2 in a quarter-final classic in the West Yorkshire Association League Cup.

The two teams battled it out in Arctic conditions at the Adel Memorial Ground and Town nearly took the lead with a stunning strike. Jonathan Unwin let fly from 40 yards out and saw his shot rattle off the crossbar.

City made the most of their escape by opening the scoring with a powerful finish from the corner of the penalty area. Town's Connor Wilson produced a carbon copy ten minutes later to level the tie at 1-1.

Fine pressure from Town striker Luke Stainthorpe caused City to make a defensive error, and his subsequent low cross was turned home by Callan Wells to put the Division Two side ahead.

Otley did not hold onto their lead for long. A free-kick on halfway dropped to Leeds striker James Burgess and his chest control allowed him to bring the ball down and fire it beyond the helpless City goalkeeper James Senior.

Leeds started the second half on top, but the Division Two side's defence held firm. They gave away a penalty with 25 minutes to go though, and City converted to go 3-2 ahead.

Otley's disappointment was compounded minutes later when Burgess added his second to give Leeds a 4-2 lead.

Town attempted to find a way back into the contest but Stainthorpe and Liam Dixon failed to convert the half-chances that fell at their feet and City held on to reach the semi-finals.

Otley's reserves maintained their lead at the summit of the Alliance 2 Division with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Whitkirk. Their goals coming from Charlie Cartwright and Adam Campbell.

The 3rds also won at the weekend to move into the semi-finals of the Craven and District Cup. They obliterated Broomhill 7-3 in a goal-laden contest.
