Leeds Carnegie flanker Chris Walker captained England as they got their International Rugby Board Junior World Championship off to a perfect start in South Africa.

England under-20s defeated their Italian counterparts 64-5 at the University of Western Cape Stadium, but Otley loanee Walker, in charge of his country for the fifth time, says that there’s more to come.

He said: “We’re really happy with the win, but this is just the beginning. There’s more to come from us and, despite the scoreline, Italy really pushed us – particularly early on.

“We’ll take a look at this game and then move on to Ireland. There’s a quick turnaround between matches so we need to recover well and then focus on the next job.

“It really is one step at a time and here we climbed up the first step.”

Fellow Carnegie and Otley loanee Dominic Barrow played for 53 minutes before being replaced by Harlequin George Merrick.
