Otley Zebras earn their stripes in cup final win

Otley Zebras were crowned Yorkshire Under-11 Cup win-ners on Sunday, beating a strong York team by two tries to nil at Sandal.

This was the culmination of a season’s efforts, starting with the Central District qualifying tournament in November. Victory there was followed by a 40-0 win against Sheffield in round two and a 42-21 defeat of Harrogate in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Otley were superb in despatching Hudd-ersfield 48-7. The final was hard fought, affair, with a strong defensive effort from York preventing Otley from finding fluency.

But Otley started to dominate at the breakdown and the deadlock was broken halfway through the first half, Adam Waring surging over from close range.

Otley put the result beyond doubt midway through the second half, with Waring again going over.

This success follows on from their appearance at Twicken-ham last season when they were runners-up in the Gullivers National Final.

The Otley squad comprised Harry Armitage, George Arm-strong, Angus Bowman, Daniel Chivers, William Cooper, Matthew Edmonds, Nathan Goldthorp, Josh Gorner, Mor-gan Greenall, Thomas Hewitt, Daniel Jones, Dean Miller, Bradley Sexton, Joseph Tin-dall, Adam Waring, James Woodward, and Oliver Wood-ley. A medal was also awarded to Benedict Lane.
