National League Two North: Caldy 10 Otley 15

HIGH-fliers Caldy, out to avenge a one-point loss at Cross Green, found Otley in no mood to comply, despite twice having a player in the sin-bin.

The visitors' forwards were back to their best, controlling the set-piece and giving scrum half Stephen Depledge the freedom of the park, which he welcomed, scoring the first try and setting up the next.

The home side made a bright start but the buzzing Depledge, given a glimpse of a chance in his own 22, slipped through and, finding the field open, raced to the line to carry out Otley’s habit of an early score for a fourth-minute try.

Meanwhile, the forwards were confounding all of Caldy’s efforts, relentlessly mauling them backwards, and from such a drive some 20 minutes later, the skipper went round the corner to put the supporting Jack Scott-Paul over.

Otley’s cover was tested when speedy winger Ben Eaves broke away but he was cut down, and the pressure increased when the yellow cards appeared but, hustle and bustle as they did, Caldy were unable to break through, even from five-metre line-outs.

The ten-point advantage was held until replacement Richard Vasey kicked a 48th-minute penalty.

This setback brought a reply, flanker Matt Heaton grounding from another solid drive, but the hosts fought their way back into the game, fly half Jack Levin crossing for a classy try.

Vasey’s conversion made for a tense last quarter and when, in the last minute, with backs joining in at a five-metre drive on the Otley line, an upset was on the cards but an infringement allowed the visitors to get the ball safely into touch.
