NEW chairman Paul Mackie believes that PET (Passion, Excellence and Togetherness) can benefit Otley Rugby Union Club on and off the field as they start their second 150 years.

At their annual meeting, the club announced a loss of £5,562 on the year ended April 30, 2015 compared to a profit the year before of £8,834, which left a balance of only £20,045.

Mackie, who took over the post in May, said: "I have run businesses for 35 years and I have never had a business where I have made a loss, and a loss is not on my agenda here.

"We need to be run more like a business. Our business is our rugby and we need to work together. We need to be seen as one club."

Mackie, whose dad played for the club in the 1950s (his ashes were scattered on the first-team pitch) and whose son Jack is a current first-team squad member, added: "I believe in PET (Passion, Excellence and Togetherness). Average is not good enough.

"Remember the three Rs that you were taught at school? I also believe in three Rs – revenue, rugby and relationship.

"I have just spoken to 140 14-year-olds from three disadvantaged Bradford schools and told them about my story as a cancer survivor, and the three words that I emphasised were 'inspire a generation'. We will inspire the next generation.

"As Sir Clive Woodward said, it is about improving 100 things by one per cent and not one thing by 100 per cent."

However, Mackie revealed that it would also need a streamlining of the club's committee structure to bring about the changes he envisages.

He said: "I will do my talking off the pitch and Cleggy (director of rugby Peter Clegg) will do his talking on the pitch

"But I cannot see myself chairing a committee of 20 to 30 people.

"I envisage an executive committee of seven to ten people with three sub-committees beneath them – revenue, rugby and operations. This simple structure works.

"I hope I am the right person to direct this format. This club is in my belly and in my soul but it not about me, it is about you, it is about the club."

Mackie also revealed the club's vision and mission statement.

He said: "Our vision is to welcome inclusiveness and be a successful family rugby club at the heart of Otley's community.

"Our mission is we will work together and maintain our National League status and we will remain a traditional rugby club."

David Somers, who became president last October, said: "We celebrated 150 years with a top-level dinner, and 2014-15 was our most comfortable season for seven years.

"The Wednesday Gang and junior section volunteers were involved in the demolition of the Scratching Shed and also in Rugby Force Weekend, while we started with a problem when James Tiffany announced that would have to step down as director of rugby and ended up with a solution with Peter Clegg coming back in April and James working underneath him.

"Keith McIntyre's newly-formed under-18 squad are the future of rugby at the club."

Mackie also revealed that the club want to form a ladies' team and a disabled team.

Officers elected included Marc Lawrence (secretary), John Nixon (treasurer) and Michael Procter (immediate past president).

Main positions were re-elected. Michael Proctor; John Nixon, treasurer; Marc Lawrence, secretary.
