Yarnbury 43

Pontefract 27

A JOE Pinnock hat-trick guided Yarnbury to a bonus point win over Yorkshire One League leaders Pontefract.

Experienced second row Ian Maycock was drafted in so the pack looked formidable for the visit of the South Yorkshire side.

Pontefract took control in the early minutes, opening up a 10-point gap with two tries.

The visitors stunned Yarnbury by making space first on the left for winger Matt Sanderson to score and then on the right as Yarnbury floundered for right wing Matthew Bacon to run to score. Both tries unconverted by full back Leon Cayne.

However with the hosts' first foray into the Pontefract half, good work by their forwards saw the ball worked to right wing Pinnick who touched down. Stand-off Danny Pound converting from the touchline.

Pontefract sensed openings in midfield and worked another try through centre Stuart Sanderson with quick hands before Yarnbury second row James Falgate removed the Pontefract defence with his strength to go under the posts, with Pound converting.

Yarnbury were getting on top through their pack and providing good controlled set piece.

The ball was being moved around by both sides with the defences holding attacks, before a sweeping move by the Yarnbury pack and backs saw open side flanker George Bowen to take a final ball to score on the left, with Pound converting again to put Yarnbury 21-15 ahead.

The visitors closed the gap with a try by Dave Findlay on the wing but fly-half Glen Boyd was just wide with the conversion to close the half 21-20 to the hosts.

Yarnbury continued to make the Pontefract pack work hard to stop the advance but the hosts were moving quick ball around the park with centres Jason Avison and James White working their partnership well. They slipped a quick ball to Pinnick to increase the Yarnbury lead in the right corner, Pound converting for the fourth try and a bonus point for the home side.

Pontefract were penalised with Yarnbury on the attack and Ian Maycock crashed over from a catch and drive to increase the home side's lead.

Pontefract's wing Dave Findley scored an unconverted try, Cayne converting.

Pinnick went in for another well worked try before substitute scrum-half Alex Crowther pinched a ball in the tackle and went over, which was unconverted try.

Pontefract managed a final score through Sanderson.
