Yarnbury 14 Barnsley 31

YARNBURY were forced to blood more talented youngsters as their unbeaten start to the season came to an end in their Yorkshire Silver Trophy first round tie.

The Horsforth club have already used 38 players this season and they finally met their match in a competitive Barnsley side.

The pack again had a new look with the influential second-row partnership of Ian Maycock and James Falgate missing, but Paul Kernick and Adam Batson were back after injuries.

George Bowen retained his place in the back row while speedy Josh Batson was at full back and winger Jack Brown returned after injury.

Josh Bell and Cameron Newby products of the junior section came onto the bench against a Barnsley side with an experienced core.

Yarnbury were on the back foot in the early stages and didn’t help themselves by giving away too many penalties.

Barnsley forward Joe South made ground and back row Tom Bagnall made his weight count for the first try which was converted by Aaron Foye, who increased the lead moments after from another penalty.

Yarnbury kicked consecutive penalties to the corner but their line-out didn’t function on one occasion and another chance went begging when they strayed offside.

The mistakes were costly as Barnsley increased their lead when centre Andrew Appleyard was the quickest to react and score from a tap penalty. Foye’s conversion extended the lead to 17-0.

Horsforth looked to take the game to their opponents in the second half and had sustained pressure throughout the third quarter but they paid for a lack of precision with the final pass.

Wingers Alex Clark and Jack Brown had runs which came to nothing and speedy full back Josh Batson caused problems running from deep, but the attacks could not crack the Barnsley defence.

Yarnbury wasted too many opportunities by holding on in the tackle or lost field position in the line-outs.

When captain Jason Avison did get over the line the referee stopped play for an injury to a Barnsley player.

Stand-off Jarrod Huss summed up Yarnbury’s frustrations when he broke the defence and went under the posts but dropped the ball when it was easier to score.

The final straw came when a Huss pass was intercepted by centre Mika Burenibla who strolled in for a try.

To the home side’s credit they scored two consolation tries as they kept up the pressure in their search for points.

Huss weaved his way under the posts and substitute wing forward Calum Fawcett went over close in. Huss converted both tries but it was too little too late.
