SSE Yorkshire Division Three: Old Modernians 6 Old Grovians 28

AFTER this win at third-placed Old Modernians, a bonus-point win at home to Old Otliensians next weekend will clinch promotion for Old Grovians.

Mods had won all nine of their previous home matches, are chasing promotion themselves and came out all guns blazing down the slope and downwind.

Well-worked phases pushed the visitors back but they turned over possession, kicked upfield and their backs put full back Joe Harrison over.

Mods followed up a missed penalty with a successful one and, although winger Aaron Magee was foiled by a foot on touch and they forced a five-metre scrum, a second home penalty gave them a 6-5 lead.

But Magee then accepted an offload by Anthony Griffin and stayed infield this time, grounding in the corner to give Grovians a 10-6 half-time advantage.

Now with the slope and the elements in their favour, Anthony Cadman landed a penalty for 13-6 and, although a couple of drop goals were missed, Grovians capitalised on a defensive fumble for Griffin to pass to winger Dion Hendricks, who scored.

Another Cadman penalty extended the advantage to 21-6 and the bonus point was secured just before full time when Magee sprinted from the halfway line to score, Cadman converting.
