Aireborough dispose of Yarnbury in Aire-Wharfe Cup
Yarnbury Hornets 13
Aireborough 30
This end of season Aire-Wharfe Cup competition threw up a derby between competitive local rivals and was eagerly awaited for the last few weeks.
Unfortunately for Yarnbury several influential second teamers were injured helping the Hornets to the top of Yorkshire 2 Merit Table and could not bolster the home side on Wednesday night.
They were also without captain Wayne Butterfield in the back row and Andy Cowley, a utility back these days giving a calming influence to a youthful side.
Aireborough first team are currently languishing in the bottom half of Yorkshire 3 but they presented a formidable test to the Hornets.
Honours were even for the first quarter but infringements by Yarnbury into the wind gave Aireborough stand-off Nick Holdsworth two easy penalties under the posts with a subsequent reply by Yarnbury stand-off Joe Churnin.
Unfortunately prop Adam Pike was sin-binned ten minutes before half- time and this was the telling aspect as Yarnbury's 14 men could not keep rampant Aireborough out and they scored three tries through full-back James Williams, winger Chris Blackshaw and No 8 Nathan Smith with Nick Holdsworth converting two.
The second-half was won by Yarnbury with a superb individual try by centre Tom Cliffe, converted by Joe Churnin ,to a last minute riposte from Aireborough stand-off Nick Holdsworth.

It took powerful winger James Morton, one of ten colts appearing, less than a minute to stride over for the first of his four tries in this Aire-Wharfe Cup tie.
Fly-half Phil Howell backed up with the first of ten conversions and, this game so obviously a miss-match, he was in again almost immediately.
Matt Stockdale, having his first run-out since his shoulder injury at Halifax in January, broke through from half-way to score, retiring shortly afterwards happy with his fitness and it was Morton again in the picture.
To their credit West Leeds never dropped their heads and when securing a five metre line-out managed to drive Melvin Murve over for their solitary try but Morton was back in business only to find himself replaced for his pains.
Left winger Phil Jackson got into the act and just before the break the prominent No 7 Ross Bannatyne was rewarded for an excellent display when he went in under the posts.
A good drive from the pack kept the score moving and No 6 Guy Ford announced his presence with the first of his two tries quickly followed by Danny Secker.
Scrum-half Dave McCormack, giving an immaculate display, twice broke at great speed from the base of his forwards to race to the posts.
Secker added his second try and No 8 Ben Mills got on the scoresheet before the referee decided enough was enough and signalled No side'.
