Aireborough secure their Division Three place
York RI 3, Aireborough 17
Aireborough secured two league points that moved them to eighth in the table and secured their place in Yorkshire Division Three next season.
Whilst it is still mathematically possible for them to slip back into the relegation zone, in reality a hard-fought win in difficult conditions will be enough for them to stay up.
The game was played in a howling gale that cut straight across the pitch and made handling extremely difficult.
This was probably the worst display that Aire have turned in all season.
Whether the significance of the fixture got to them, or whether they found the conditions difficult to master was hard to fathom.
They struggled throughout an afternoon that was typified by missed and dropped passes.
York had first use of the wind and after only a minute took the lead with a penalty.
After 15 minutes Aireborough battled their way against the conditions and a break by fly half Nick Holdsworth saw veteran James Kinghorn on hand to cross the line for the first of two tries.
The remainder of the half saw play break down on numerous occasions.
The flow of the game was also repeatedly punctuated by the referee's whistle as the official gave some strange decision that bewildered both sides.
The second half was no better than the first. With neither side seeming capable of stringing together more than a couple of passes.
It was Kinghorn who again broke the deadlock when, from broken play, he seized the ball to cross for a try converted by Holdsworth.
The final score came from another Aireborough veteran when Richard Fall emerged from a melee of players to bully his way across the line for an unconverted try
The final quarter of the game saw a revival from York as they tried to punch holes through a resiliant Aireborough defence.
The visitors, however, held out and the final whistle saw Aire jubilant whilst York are probably condemned to relegation.
