Zack continues to improve

Otley Athletic Club members travelled to Cumbria and Wakefield to compete in 10k races last Sunday.

Zack Whitehead continues to improve with another PB on a fast course at the Rothwell 10k. Zack's time of 33.55 put him in tenth place.

Howard Jeffrey's time of 38.50 placed him as fifth M50. The winner was Steven Neill of Pudsey and Bramley in 31.39. A total of 668 runners completed the race.

Otley's veteran superstars Jack and Kath Robertshaw continue to sweep all before them in the veteran categories as they travelled up to Cumbria for the Great Langdale 10k.

Wet and windy conditions and a very undulating course didn't stop Jack coming in first M65 in an impressive time of 44.37 while Kath took first lady over 55 (and 17th lady overall) in 48.13. James Douglas of Border Harriers was the winner (31.56) and there were a record number of finishers with 393 runners completing the course.

Otley AC welcome runners of all abilities. They meet at Otley RUFC on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.15pm for a variety of distances including a coached session on Tuesdays. The Junior Section meets at the rugby pitches near Stephen Smith's Garden Centre, on Wednesdays from 6.30 to 7.30 pm. For more details see Otley's website www.otleyac.co.uk.

Ilkley Harriers A fast course for the Rothwell 10K race usually attracts a bumper field of road runners for whom shaving seconds or minutes off their previous bests is a must.

Four Ilkley Harriers returned with new best times for the distance. James Wood-Robertson did 34.13 (PB), Sarah Jarvis 37.05 (PB) Marc Teasey 38.00 (PB), Amanda Oddie 38.55, Neil Chapman 39.08, Steven Weston 40.15, Peter Shields 40.57, Jane Bryant 45.26 (PB) Pat Lonergan 54.05.

Due to age John Atkinson has to run on softer surfaces these days so on Sunday took part in a two-lap race around Graves Park, Sheffield, run on grass and footpaths. The race was won by Thomas Bailey in 36.09. John finished 24th in 42.37. A total of 640 completed the race.

In the Anniversary Waltz, a classic horseshoe race in the Lake District's Newlands Valley, on Saturday Emma Payne covered the 11.5miles and 3,600ft of climbing. A clear day made the navigation problem-free but high winds meant Emma finished in 3hrs 8mins.
