Anna shares in GB cycling glory
RAWDON cyclist Anna Blyth was among a host of British cyclists who put a smile on the country's face with a superb team performance in the World Cycling Championships at the Manchester Velodrome last weekend.
Also racing was Otley rider Lizzie Armitstead. Both local riders are in the British Olympic Academy Programme, Anna for track sprinting and Lizzie for the women's endurance.
The British team dominated the world championships in a way no one has done since the heyday of the French in the late 1990s.
Great Britain won nine gold and two silver medals with some thrilling riding, particularly by Otley Town Centre Race favourites Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish in the Madison.
Anna figured in the women's keirin final along with Victoria Pendleford who bagged the silver medal. Anna finished fourth in her first heat but reached the final in the repecharge with a second place in round two's first heat chasing Pendleton home.
In the women's 500m time trial Anna produced a personal best and finished ninth overall and also qualified as 13th fastest in the women's sprint being beaten in the first round by Clara Sanchez of France.
Lizzie finished 21st in the women's points race won by Dutch rider Marianne Vos.
An amazing performance was that of Rebecca Romero who in the last Olympic's gained a silver medal along with Guiseley's Debbie Flood in the rowing. She has switched sports and looks like heading for the Olympics now as a cyclist after picking up two gold medals in Manchester.
