Golf round up
BEN RHYDDING: The very successful partnership of Pam Harling and Steve Douglas continued on Sunday in a mixed greensome competition. The weather was excellent with very hot sunshine. The course is in very good order making play so enjoyable.
Results: 1, P Harling and S Douglas 52 points; 2, SE Hartley and I Clark 4; 3, S Firth and TM Lockwood 38; 4, B Watts and B Robinson 38.
An individual stableford off full handicap played in the morning produced these results: 1, F Drake 43 points; 2, P Kendall 39; 3, D Allister 38; 4, M Tipping 38; 5, B Ackroyd 37.
The Ladies competition on Mr President's Day was a stableford over 13 holes off full handicap. Results: 1, R Doherty 25 points; 2, S Firth 23; Nearest the pin on 7th - I Macdonald; Nearest the pin on 16th - B Watts; President's Prize- P Harling.
OTLEY: Otley golfer, Winifred Varley, Captain of the Yorkshire Ladies' English Women's Golf Association, organised a Yorkshire Day at Otley Golf Club on Friday.
Many Otley golf club members enjoyed the day which culminated with a meal at the golf club which was hosted by Winifrid Varley and her husband.
The Annual Invitation Day with 220 players teeing off from 7.30am and continuing right through to 4pm enjoyed good weather, excellent course conditions and a roving refreshment buggy.
At the evening presentation the organiser of the day, Vice-Captain Mike Bailey, thanked the starters with special mention to Eric Frankland who acted as registrar and results co-ordinator during the entire day.
Mr Bailey, assisted by his wife Vivienne, presented prizes to the first seven winning pairs. The overall winners were Dave Midgley with his partner and former member, Matthew Campbell. Their round was made even sweeter by Matthew scoring a hole-in-one on the 17th. Winning names of the Otley members were:1, D Midgley; 2, G Blackburn; 3, K Connolly; 4, D Hannah; 5, Andy Murray; 6, D Holder; 7, D Horne
Earlier in the week the ladies played their monthly medal with a number of competitors then playing a further round in the afternoon. Their 36 hole score was then submitted for the President's Cup which was won by a large margin by Morag Wilkinson.
Medal results were: Division One - R Harrison 90 (19) 71; J Wood 93 (20) 73. Division Two -M Wilkinson 89 (26) 63; A Ridyard93 (21) 72.
Division Three - P Waterhouse 100 (35) 65; W Smith 101 (29) 72.
President's Cup: Winner - M Wikinson 63, 71, 134; Runner-up A Ridyard 72, 78, 150.
BRACKEN GHYLL: In the Jerome Jug, a Flag Competition, Rod Sutcliffe won in style but not without drama. He had four shots left after completing 18 holes and managed to par the first hole on the second time round so finishing on the second tee nudging Bob Marchant into second place despite Bob having five shots left on the 18th.
Bob only managed to get to the first green. Rod kept his nerve to par it and take the spoils. Chris Hainsworth and Stewart Miller managed to get up the first fairway.
In the Herbert Walker August Medal the consistent Russell Beck got the better of a countback with the in-form John Taylor, both six under par with excellent 63 nets. Richard Bielby claimed third place with 64 nett. These scores certainly had the Handicap Secretary smiling!
In Division Two Captain Steve Conroy showed he can still play coming out on top of a three way countback with David Cooke and Peter Grummitt all on creditable 67nets.
HORSFORTH: A total of 81 teams entered the 75th Anniversary four-ball competition at Horsforth Golf Club on Saturday with the winners bringing in a very low score of 60.
Results: A Hurley and R S Lewis 60; and S Lehan and S McDermott 62; D Vine and S Vine 63; N Luke and R Layton 64; B Mortimer and P Moran 64.
Horsforth Rabbits arranged a club exchange visit with West End Golf Club, Halifax, on Sunday with the Halifax players having visited Horsforth on July 25.
A party of 48 members from Horsforth were made to feel very welcome and despite the on off rain showers throughout the day thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
In the morning there was an 11 hole three man team event with two best scores to count. This was won by Ron Turnbull, Fane Pike and David Booth on 51 points followed by Andy Taylor, Malcolm Elrick and Stuart Parmenter on 43 points.
In the afternoon there was a four-ball, better- ball competition which was won by Geoff Lee and his partner Nick Fournier with 36 points their score being helped by Geoff having a hole-in-one on the par three tenth.
He treated all the players to the delights of a small whisky in celebration. Ron Turnbull and Les Robinson came second with 35 points.
ILKLEY LADIES: The winner of the Robertson Cup (played over two rounds on two consecutive weeks) was Ann Gillon with an aggregate score of 139. Sue Atkins was runner up with 149.
The B team had a convincing home win over Fulford 5-1. Sheila Fraser, Pam Blackburn, Judy Sherwin, Bernice Cawthra and Margaret Dodd won their matches, Ann Gillon halved hers but they lost 2-4 at Fulford. Sheila Fraser and Pam Blackburn won their matches and Elaine Pickles halved hers.
The August Stableford was played in not very pleasant conditions. In Division One Sue Holroyd won with 35 points, runner-up was Camilla Dyson with 32 points.
Karen French was the winner in Division Two with 33 points, Angela Jackson was the runner up with 31 points.
