THERE may be some confusion in the England women's hockey ranks out in Madrid with two players with the same name - much capped Jo Ellis is figuring at number 9 while former Ben Rhydding hockey player Joanne Ellis - who also goes under the name Jo - is figuring at number 21 as England bid to make the semi-finals of the World Cup.
England were left needing to beat Spain in their game played yesterday to seal the last semi-final place but they could only manage a 1-1 draw. Spain now join the Netherlands, Australia and Argentina in the semi-finals.
Joanne played last Wednesday in England's 3-2 win over China and almost got on the scorehseet with an effort just before half-time.
England won this opening game in the Samsung Women's Hockey World Cup with goals from Alex Danson, Lucilla Wright and Crista Cullen.
England next played the Netherlands and went down 1-0 to a 13th minute penalty corner and again Joanne figured in the game.
The current Doncaster player - she moved there for National League hockey from Ben Rhydding at the age of 18 - also figured in the third pool match - a 1-1 draw with India in which England's goal was scored by Chloe Rogers. Her sixth came when she played in the England side that defeated Olympic champions Germany 1-0 on Tuesday. They won with a goal from their captain Helen Richardson.
Joanne is being watched in Spain by her mother Sundy and sister Raine who both play for Ben Rhydding Hockey Club.
Until July Joanne was the Hockey Coach at Westville House School in Ilkley. Jo left to start a course at Leeds Met University this October.
