Jamie, seven enjoys Hawks debut despite defeat

Jamie Peel might not have ended up on the winning side, but at least he enjoyed his Hawks debut at the tender age of seven.

They were involved in a very competitive match last Saturday, when they took on a strong Yorkshire Post side at Kirklington in bright, breezy conditions.

Opting to bat first, Yorkshire Post made a very impressive score of 280-8 as the Hawks bowlers toiled on a batsman-friendly pitch.

Only Freddie Parker, with 2-54 off seven overs, came away with any credit.

The Hawks didn’t help themselves in the field either, dropping several catches at key times, three of which were off the luckless Simon Armitage, whose figures of 1-41 deserved much better.

Following a splendid tea, provided and served by Clare Claughton, the Hawks were made to struggle all the way against tight Yorkshire Post bowling, backed up by sound fielding.

Eventually the hosts were skittled for 160 and that would have been a lot worse had it not been for 96 not out from Ted Lester, as the Hawks replied with four ducks, the next highest score being ‘Mr Extras’ (29).

The Hanson went to Freddie Parker (42 seconds), and on Saturday the Hawks take on Harrow Old Boys at Aysgarth School, Newton le Willows in an all-day match (11.30am start).
