Burley’s cricketers are celebrating after retaining the Waddilove Cup.

They defeated Follifoot by six wickets at Colton on Sunday.

Skipper Mark Harrison, who led his side to the Aire-Wharfe league and cup double last season, said: “It is great for a club like ours to win the cup again.

“That’s three trophies in two seasons after a long period when the club won nothing.

“The league title is out of our reach this season but hopefully the cup win will give us the impetus to go on and finish as high as possible.”

The final was effectively decided by a dramatic Follifoot batting collapse which saw them lose their last seven wickets for 14 runs as they were bowled out for 87 after Harrison put them in to bat.

Although strike bowler Nick Brook removed both openers with just 11 on the board, there was no hint of what was to follow Mick Halmshaw (28) and James Pickles (17) looked to have steadied the innings until young Australian Daniel Meredith (4-22) and Neil Davies (4-23) made a dramatic intervention wwhich changed the game.

“There was a bit in the wicket after the rain and they got the ball to do a bit,” said Harrison.

They were also backed by some good catching, but Follifoot will rue a couple of careless shots.

Burley lost opener Richard Brook early in their reply as the Follifoot opening bowlers Greg Lambert and David Wright tried to hit back.

Burley were in some trouble at 42-4, but they kept their nerve and were steered to victory by Nick Brook and Harrison who shared an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 48.

Brook was the one batsman in the match who was able to dominate the bowling and his unbeaten 43, allied to his 2-17 in seven overs earlier, deservedly earned him the man-of-the -match accolade.

Harrison was happy to play the support role as he finished 14 not out.

“Nick was excellent. He ensured we won the game.

“Looking back it was definitely a good toss to win and after the Follifoot collapse we knew exactly what we had to do.

“They didn’t make it easy but we took our time and made sure that we won. It’s a great feeling to win finals.”
