Aire-Wharfe League
Aire-Wharfe retain White Rose Trophy

The Airedale and Wharfedale League again demonstrated its strength with the continued success of its under- 21 side in winning the White Rose Trophy.

At the third attempt the weather permitted the fixture to get underway with an early 11am start at Elsecar CC, a fine ground to host a cup final.

Captain Toby Jacklin won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like an excellent cricket wicket. Jamie Pickering and Phil Critchley set about the task of building a good start but when Pickering hit one straight back the bowler got a hand on the ball which, unfortunately for Critchley, diverted the ball on to the stumps and he was run out.

This early misfortune brought Michael Abbot in and he made a solid 38. When Abbot was removed Greg Pickles joined Pickering who went on to make a hard hitting 95 before falling lbw and receiving a well-deserved standing ovation from the supporters.

Pickles went on to make a much needed 50 with support from Mark Harrison, Tom Hudson and Andy Rhodes all contributing with 20 runs apiece which brought a total of 251-8 off 50 overs.

South Yorkshire were not undaunted and played some aggressive shots. Under pressure from the start the victory target always seemed a tall order and ultimately would prove to be too much for the home team.

Wickets fell regularly after the 12th man Darren Simpson, who had taken the field at the interval, produced a vital run out to reduce the South Yorkshire league to 50-3. The away team then began to apply even more pressure with their spinners.

A few South Yorkshire batsmen got starts but were no match for Tom Hudson's leg spin as he took 5-37 and in doing so removed two key players in two balls. Captain Jacklin chipped in with two wickets to finish off a great victory.

South Yorkshire were bowled out for 165 and fell 86 runs short of their target. Jamie Pickering deservedly picked up the Man-of-the-Match award edging out Tom Hudson.

The raising of the trophy for the second successive year brought particular pleasure to the team manager Chris Smith.

The winning White Rose Trophy team was: Toby Jacklin (Collingham) captain, Greg Pickles Follifoot), Phil Critchley (Beckwithshaw), James Lilley (Beckwithshaw), Tom Hudson (North Leeds), Shane Etherington (Burley), Alex Bailey (Ilkley), Michael Abbott (Green Lane), Andrew Rhodes (Ilkley), Mark Harrison (Burley), Jamie Pickering (Rawdon) wk, Darren Simpson (Bilton).
