Never a dull moment on course with ‘village feel’

Driving between Keighley and Skipton, you see Riddlesden perched high on the moor.

Founded before the last war by members of the village, the club still retains that ‘village feel’ – it has a real community atmosphere.

On non-competition days at weekends, there is a draw for partners so you quickly get to know fellow members. It is a club without airs and graces but with a friendly feel.

The 18-hole course is on land leased from Bradford Council and its height gives it imposing views.

While it might only be a par 63, it is certainly memorable, not least for its par threes.

Members say there’s no dull hole on the course, and you can’t disagree.

However, two – the sixth and 15th – stand out. Both are very short, just a wedge down into a disused quarry, but with trouble short and out of bounds surrounding the green if you are too big or a little off-line.

They were once featured in a list of the 100 most extraordinary holes in the British Isles.

Set out on the moorside, the course drains well but in the summer you need to use the contours as each drive and approach shot is sure to follow the slopes.

The club used to have a very cramped car park but recent improvements have gone some way towards rectifying this problem, with additional spaces created.

Other improvements to drainage out on the course and new tees have helped ensure that Riddlesden remains an important part of the Bradford golfing scene.
