The 28th Horsforth 10K attracted a record field on Sunday. Organised by Horsforth Harriers, the race was run from its established base at Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge.

Race Director Bob Foulkes said: “We had more than 680 entries and 595 runners on the day. By comparison, the 2011 race had 437 runners on the day so there were 158 additional competitors this year.

“It was a challenge for us all to put on a race as big as this.

“The weather was kind to us again, overcast but perfect temperature for the runners. It was a joy to see nearly 600 runners thunder down Woodlands Drive at the start.”

Leading the way was race winner Shaun Dimelow of Barnsley AC, 33:59, ahead of second placed runner Panos Aristotelous 34:23.

In third place was David Thompson, also of Barnsley AC in 34:56. The Wetherby ladies veterans were triumphant in the women’s race.

Pauline Munro of Wetherby Runners, 38:56, finished in 33rd position overall to take first place honours, closely followed by runner up and fellow club member Lisa Mawer, 39:11.

Third lady home was Donna Edmondson Booker of Idle AC, 39:43.

Thanks to the continuing generosity of the running community a sizeable sum was raised for the race’s designated charity, Deaf Ex-Mainstreamers’ Group (DEX). DEX is an entirely deaf-led organisation that exists to support the needs of deaf children in mainstream education. Horsforth Harrier Serena Blackburn nominated the charity to benefit from this year’s race.

Serena, who has been profoundly deaf since birth, was nominated by DEX to be a torchbearer in the Paralympic Torch Relay. She also competed at the Deaf Olympics in Taiwan three years ago, achieving a bronze medal. On Sunday Serena ran the Horsforth 10K alongside Paralympian blind runner Louise Simpson of Southend AC. Louise completed the course in 1:07:33. The local clubs gave good support to the event. Matthew Cox had a great run for Ilkley Harriers finishing 16th in 36:57.

Caz Farrow also ran well to finish 68th in 41:28. Otley’s top finisher was Simon Anderson who clocked 39:33. Richard Smith 40:18, Howard Jeffrey 42:11, Colin Best 49:04, Tom Hannah 50:07, Billy Rayner 52:29 and Dave Hainsworth 56:39 also competed. Tony Pfeiffer led the Aire-Centre Pacers contingent coming 188th in 46.53, followed by Angela Crawford in 48.18 (235th).

Richard Archer, whose training has recently been limited by injury, came 327th in 51.54 just ahead of the ever dependable Lynne Morris in 53.01 (361st), who was two minutes faster than last year and again won the first prize for her age group. Linda Braham completed the team with a time of 63.31 (544th).

The race was sponsored for the fourth successive year by Horsforth-based medical software company TPP. Horsforth officials have now started planning for next summer’s Apperley Bridge Canter (ABC) from the same venue, which although a comparative youngster compared to the 10K race, is set to become just as popular.
