With the season in both the Aireborough and the Otley Leagues now drawing to a climax all teams are keeping a close eye on the tables to see what they need to achieve to either win a title or avoid relegation.

The first of the championships was decided in the Aireborough League on Monday night as Paul Rix and John Waite of Hawkhill secured enough points to give them an unassailable lead at the top of the billiards table.

Taking on High Royds, Waite was up against Harold Longster and although his opponent looked in superb form early in the match with a 40 break, the match started to swing Waite’s way later on.

A nice 22 break secured the match for Waite.

Rix was taking on John Cooper and it was the High Royds man who started the better, although there was never much in the match.

Rix just managed to get ahead and some cool, steady potting enabled him to take the match, secure the the five-point maximum team score and claim the title for him and his partner.

In the Otley League it’s really too close to call and the quest for the title could really go down to the final frame or even last black of the season.

Hollygarth lead Grovehill A by just two points but crucially Hollygarth have a bye to come in the last week so despite an emphatic 8- 2 over Ilkley Cons this week, they need to maximise their return from the next two games to give themselves a chance.

Hawkhill are still in the race after a 6-4 win over Falcon B but Burley Social really slipped up at Yeadon Cons A as they lost 9-1 and are probably now out of contention. At the bottom, Falcon B and Otley Social look to be destined for Division Two snooker next season.

Guiseley Bowls are certain for promotion from Division Two and stamped their class on this week’s results with a ruthless 10-0 whitewash of Menstone D.

The other promotion places are still up for grabs as any of eight teams could join the Guiseley club in the top flight.

Menstone A defeated Burley Unionists 8-2 and Yeadon Cons B moved into second place with a 6-4 win over High Royds B.

Hollygarth B beat Factory 6-4 to join three teams on 119 points.

In the singles competition Lee Taylor went to Burley Social to take on the in-form Ben Gardiner and it was the Burley player who got the better start taking the first frame.

The second frame was really tight and Taylor managed to win it on the pink to take the match to a decider.

Gardiner’s game suddenly seemed to desert him and Taylor used his experience to build a lead and close out the match to progress.

Also in the singles Howard Dadge of Otley Cons was entertaining Phil King of High Royds and in a close match King took his opportunities and the match 2-0.

In the quarter final King will face Yeadon Libs’ Andy Harrison in a mouth-watering contest.
