The world’s leading two triathletes, Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, destroyed the 221-strong field to take gold and silver at the Yorkshire Cross-Country Championships.

World triathlon champion Alistair impressed at a windswept Thornes Park in Wakefield as he completed the course in 34min 51sec.

Brother Jonathan just pipped Keighley & Craven’s Jorge Thomas for second place – four seconds behind his brother.

Despite packing their remaining counters between 24th and 32nd place in the shape of Ian Holmes, Andy Peace, Andy Brown and Stephen Broadbent, the Bingley challenge was blunted by a formidable Leeds City squad.

Led by Alan Buckley (fifth), Leeds were able to place six runners in the top 20 to take the team title ahead of Hallamshire, with Bingley third.

John Heneghan (P&B) was sixth while Ilkley Harriers, led by Tom Adams in 22nd, were ninth out of 20 teams, just four points ahead of Keighley & Craven.

Adams was supported by 76th David Westhead 42:08, 78th Jim Ryder 42:14, 89th Dave Wilby 42:53, 133rd Mark Iley 45:26, 134th Nick Pearce 45:28, 153rd Mark Mon-Williams 46:47, and 212nd Pete Shields 55:18.

Otley’s Andrew Robertshaw finished 65th in 41:23. He said: “After all the recent rain the usual Thornes Park lap was shortened and made less hilly, but the going was surprisingly firm underfoot.”

Skyrac were represented by Chris Dove 86th, Tim Straughan 106th and Martin Hawkins 202nd.

Spenborough junior Jennifer Walsh, who was an English Schools 800m gold medallist in 2011, defied her more experienced rivals to win the ladies race.

First-year Durham University student Walsh – who turns 19 next month and is still classed as a junior – came home 18 seconds ahead of Bingley’s Emma Clayton, with another Harrier Victoria Wilkinson, third.

Ilkley ladies were seventh in the team event thanks to with Sally Morley 5th in 22:47, 38 Diane Haggar 24:01, 40 Emma Barclay 24:10, 57 Helen Thurston 25:24, 89 Florence Haines (junior lady) 27:37 and 107 Sue Morley 30:09.

Emma Inglis 73rd and Arifa Chackera 102nd coloured the colours of Skyrac.

The Skyrac under-17 ladies were second in the team standings thanks to Hannah Brown (fourth), Helen Wood (ninth) and Jaye Riley (25th). Molly Keefe 26th, Daisy Agar 36th, Claire Shepperd 38th, Lizzy Garnett 40th also ran well for Skyrac.

Ilkley’s Georgia Malir was an excellent third after another strong run and has been selected for Yorkshire in the Inter Counties along with Brown.

Holmfirth took the under-13s title, with Olivia Sykes leading the way in third, two places ahead of Sarah Pickering, from Ilkley Harriers.

Ilkley were strongly represented and their teams were fourth, eighth and tenth due to the determined efforts of 5th Sarah Pickering 10:54, 23rd Lucy Haines 12:09, 30th Zoe Judkowski 12:34, 33rd Tassy Heslop 12:40, 40th Lucy Jacques 12:54, 42nd Jemima Elgood 12:58, 43rd Tilly Melechi 13:01, 48th Elizabeth Westhead 13:15, 49th Josie Clarke 13:18, 58th Jessica Burgess 13:48 59th Alessandra Ricci 13:52.

Skyrac had two entrants in the under-13 girls race, Under 13 girls race. Amy Francis 14th, Pauline Hall 27th both had good solid runs.

In the under-13 boys, Skyrac were sixth. Under 13 boys 6th team. Ben Thompson produced his best run of the season to finish 13th and was supported by James Parrish 34th, Henry Wood 38th, James Greenbabk 39th and Daniel Batty 55th.

Ilkley were 11th with 36th Max Curran 11:59, 48th James Pickering 12:28, 53rd Edgar Woodhead 12:48, and 57th Tom Cross 13:04 running hard.

The Ilkley team were ninth in the under-15 boys race. Their runners were, 37th Tom Kerr 17:57, 40th Ruaridh Mon-Williams 18:04, 45th Jack Cummings 18:34,and 54th Ed Bickerdike 19:13. The team was ninth overall.

Lucy Williamson was 18th in the under-15 girls race in 15.22.
