Bramhope's Brownlee brothers set for county title battle

Jonathan’s county title is on the line as he looks to avenge elder brother Alistair’s win over him in last Saturday’s Auld Lang Syne Race. And it promises to be another intriguing dual between the world’s top two triathletes.

After finishing second at Haworth, Jonathan said: “Ali is fresher than me at the moment, and he just had the edge. He even pulled a few more seconds out of me on the last really muddy moorland crossing back to the finish.

“Training is going well especially after winning the Chevin Chase on Boxing Day for the second time, although all this rain is getting to be a bit tedious, I wouldn’t mind some snow,” he chuckled.

Alistair, who missed the Chevin Chase to compete in the Reebok Ribble Valley 10k where he finished second, won the Auld Lang Syne Race in 40min 28 sec and was 11 seconds ahead of Jonathan as he crossed the finishing line.

The world triathlon champion was pleased with how the race panned out and the way his preparations for Olympic year are taking shape.

He said: “I took the lead 50 yards from the Trig and on the rough descent back to the Pennine Way took my chance.

“Out of Sladen Beck I just kept pushing, knowing that Jonny never gives up.

“I crossed the line, tired, exhausted, knackered, but very happy to win the race for the third time.

“The Reebok 10k (29.15) and this have taken their toll, but I’m happy to be running so well in December because last year I was injured. and was unable to race.

” The organisers were also delighted with the support the Brownlees gave to their event. More people than usual turned up to watch two of Great Britain’s potential Olympic gold medal winners compete.
