MULTI world champion Dougie Lampkin made one of his rare British trials outings on Monday and demonstrated just why he is still one of the top riders in the world.

Not only did he win the Renee Smith Charity Memorial Trial at Dob Park from Chester's Dec Bullock and Denby Dale teenager Jack Price, but he demonstrated the Vertigo machine in a Yorkshire trial in front of 146 rivals.

Twenty very young small-wheel riders missed the action while riding in their own separate event but they knew who was competing at Dob Park.

Lampkin completed the course with just two penalties and finished six ahead of Bullock while Price had 15 penalties in third place.

What was more amazing was the distances some competitors travelled. Sisters Alicia and Leah Robinson rode Scarborough on Sunday then Dob Park before heading home to Didcot.

Luke Walker made the trip from Ashby-de-la-Zouch but the MRS Sherco teamster broke a rear chain and lost some time effecting a repair.

John Crinson rode a brand new Beta for the first time after driving from Gateshead. Alice Minta also rode a Yorkshire double then headed for Shropshire with her father.

The Spen Valley club defied the odds and managed to stage their seventh championship trial at exposed Harden Moor on Sunday.

At least the winter sun broke through the few clouds allowing 44 competitors to contest the only event in West Yorkshire over the Christmas weekend.

Only Gildersome inter John Hillam and Keighley teenager Jacob Snowdon competed on the hard route sections.

Peter Field headed a dozen Clubman A contenders to beat Nigel Scott and Tom Green by a single penalty.

Keighley Class A youngster Joe Fox put in a great ride to win his class but also finish overall sixth in amongst the adult riders.

Harrogate Clubman B contender Mick Ward just managed to beat Denholme's Andy Brooksbank by a single mark over the ten-section four-lap course.

The latter's daughter Olivia won her class making it a family double. Spen will stage the 1st club championship of the season at Harden Moor on January 10 communing at noon.
