THE latest Otley 10-Mile Road Race was a gripping event with Nathaniel Williams first across the line in 55:34, beating last year’s winner Mike Jefferies (Billingham Marsh Harriers) by just under a minute.

His time of 56:26 was just enough to hold Otley AC's Scott Harrington (56:38) who was being chased down by another Otley runner, and the 2012 winner, Matt John in 57:05.

Harrogate’s Andy Grant was fifth in 57:28, and first MV40, just ahead of another Otley man and first MV50 Mark Hall (59:03) who crossed the line 10 seconds in front of Valley Strider Andy May (59:13), while yet another Otley ACer Liam Dunne was eight (59:34).

For the ladies, first home was Sharon Barlow (Ripon Runners) in 1:03:45, followed by Hannah Holyord (UKnetrunner) in 1:06:31 and Donna Edmondson Booker (Skyrac) third in 1:06:53.

Otley took the team prize, with Skyrac AC winning the ladies accolade.

Meanwhile Joanna Hobson took part in the Borrowdale 13km Trail Race, the results of which are awaited.

She said: "Having attended the registration and briefing on Saturday afternoon and discovered there was a 21k, 42k including Scafell Pike and a triathlon all running a similar route I quickly brushed up on my map reading skills to ensure I didn’t find myself swimming in Derwentwater or clambering over Scafell Pike!

"My preparation proved to pay off as several runners did apparently take wrong turns and I was actually able to guide a few on the right route, which was really quite remarkable.

"The winner of the 13k event is currently awaited and according to my tag printout I came in 56th position out of 108 finishers in a time of 1:38:40 and was fourth in my age category."

She added: "Unfortunately when I attended the official presentation in the afternoon it became apparent that a number of runners had taken the wrong route and had run a much shorter and lower level route and, therefore, the results are questionable.

"This obviously impacts on everybody’s place but my Garmin proved I had done the full correct route.

"The runner claiming the first place had run the wrong route causing a very unpleasant argument with the course organiser. The 2013 winner did a time of 1:03:29 and the first runner over the line this year came back in 46 minutes. Oops!"

Well done to Tom Adams fourth in the senior men's race and Georgia Malir who won the under-23 junior women's race, at the British Athletics Senior Home International which was also the BA trial for the European Championships.

A super result too from Lucy Williamson in the FU23 race.

the breaking news from today's race is that Jane McCarthy stormed home to take First Lady's place in 3h35. Dick Waddington had another superb race finishing 1 minute in front in 3h34. This is a truly stunning race. So much so that I stopped to take half a dozen photos at various points. Anybody who was disappointed that The Wharfedale Off Road
