Guiseley earn FA Cup replay through James Walshaw

Guiseley recovered from an early setback to earn a draw at Colwyn Bay and bring this FA Cup third qualifying-round tie back to Nethermoor for a replay on Tuesday.

The Lions were stunned by their Welsh hosts’ opener, which most of the visiting supporters did not even see.

The teams lined up but changed ends following the customary coin toss and while the Guiseley fans were filing around the perimeter fencing to get behind the goal their team were attacking, Rob Hopley neatly controlled a long ball and tucked in a shot just seconds after the first whistle.

The Lions, who had beaten their league rivals 2-0 in a Blue Square Bet North clash at the same venue last month, soon settled.

Danny Ellis got his head to Andy Holdsworth’s fifth-minute free-kick but the effort went over the target.

Midway through the first half Guiseley did draw level and it was from the boot of James Walshaw.

A good ball by Danny Boshell sent Wayne Brooksby away and his early cross picked out Walshaw, who fired in a left-foot shot.

That was the end of the scoring but the second half was still a lively affair.

Gavin Rothery saw a shot deflected wide and Guiseley team-mate Walshaw put a header just over the target when he looked to have been pulled back.

Walshaw was off target with a later free-kick and substitute Josh Wilson was wide with an effort from open play. Nicky Boshell also saw a shot saved before both sides were reduced to ten men.

Boshell picked up a second yellow card with just over two minutes remaining and Bay’s Gareth Evans suffered a similar fate in the final throes.

Guiseley spokesman Stuart Allen said: “We are in the hat for Monday’s draw, so by the time we replay we will both know who awaits in the next round.

“The Conference Premier Division sides come into the competition at this stage.

“There were no fresh injuries in the match, with all the changes being tactical. I’m sure Steve (Lions manager Kittrick) will be happy with that – and home advantage in the replay.”
