Derby denied Ilkley double by Hillyer

Derbyshire, or strictly speaking the Central United Reformed Church Club in Derby, failed to complete a double on Saturday at the JM Glendinning Group Ilkley Open.

Seventh seed Christopher Simpson did his bit, defeating former world over-35 No 1 Sebastian Jackson from Cheshire 6-4, 6-3 in an entertaining men’s singles final.

But top seed Yasmin Clarke, restricted by tendonitis in her right wrist, could not add to that in the women’s singles at the AEGON British Tour tournament, being beaten 6-3, 6-3 by second seed and 2010 champion Natasha Hillyer (Warwickshire) in the women’s singles final.

Hillyer was leading 6-3, 4-3 when the match was interrupted by a light shower, the match transferring from grass to indoors, where Clarke could not capitalise on a break point.
