Guiseley game marred by injury to full back Lloyd

Kendal Town 2, Guiseley 1

Defeat at Kendal Town paled into insignificance by the serious injury sustained by Guiseley right back Anthony Lloyd in the closing stages of Saturday’s UniBond League Premier Division game.

It was a career threatening injury that shattered the former Huddersfield Town full-back and sickened his colleagues.

Kendal Town survived a late fightback by Guiseley to secure the three points as they kept the pace with the front runners in the UniBond Premier Division.

On a gusty day at Parkside the home side had the better of the opening exchanges as Carl Osman, and then Danny Wisdom spurned early chances. Guiseley came into the match after 15 minutes and a Craig Bentham shot went narrowly wide from 18 yards.

With Osman and Kieran Walmsley showing form on the right wing it was only a matter of time before the home side took the upper hand.

On 20 minutes, striker Alex Taylor knocked the ball down to debutant Andy Bell in the centre of the Guiseley half. Bell passed out wide to Walmsley who had a speculative shot from distance which never troubled Jon Worsnop’s goal.

Guiseley responded with Lloyd going on a darting run, only to be brought down on the edge of the area. The resultant free-kick was neatly collected by David Newnes. A determined Town side pushed on though and got their rewards after 29 minutes.

Wisdom tapped the ball to Bell who passed it back to Gary Stopforth who had a shot. The ball deflected back to the edge of the area and Alex Taylor was on hand to drive a low shot past Wornsop in the Guiseley goal.

Guiseley almost got back on level terms minutes later when Steve Burton whipped a free-kick into the box, only for it to be pushed out for a corner.

Town raised their game and Taylor bagged his second on the 40-minute mark when Callum Warburton knocked the ball to the impressive Osman.

He threaded the ball through the Guiseley defence and Taylor kept his cool to slot the ball past the ’keeper.

Guiseley were rejuvenated after the break, bringing on Mark Bett for Liam Needham, and should have got back into the game on 48 minutes when Lee Tuck knocked the ball out to Burton.

He sent the ball spinning into the box and a better connection by James Walshaw would have reduced the deficit. Instead, it went high and wide.

On the hour mark another chance went begging when a Burton corner was knocked out of the box, only for Walshaw to drive low and wide.

The last 20 minutes were fractious as the pitch deteriorated. Newnes was injured after 74 minutes in a crunching tackle with Tuck, and was forced into substitution after 87 minutes.

Tempers flared late on as Warren Beattie for Town and James Cotterill and Dave Merris for Guiseley were booked.

Guiseley pressed on as centre-half Tony Hallam was put between the sticks and when the board went up with six minutes of stoppage time, Town were hanging on.

Two minutes in Guiseley gave themselves hope of a draw when a stunning 20-yard shot by Bentham slipped under Hallam into the net.

A minute later the drama continued as Warburton and Lloyd went into a hard challenge which left the latter in agony on the deck.

An ambulance was called and Lloyd was stretchered off with a suspected knee dislocation and broken fibia.

The sides played out the remaining minutes after the delay waiting for the ambulance.
