Otley Golf Club's new Lady Captain and Lady President

It is the time of year for the Ladies' Section at Otley Golf Club to deal with their administrative business.

This commenced with the section’s annual dinner, when all attendees were welcomed with a glass of wine and at which Mrs Janet Thompson and Mrs Lynne Stewart assumed the offices of Ladies’ President and Ladies’ Captain respectively.

Under leaden clouds on the following Tuesday, a large gathering of family, friends and members witnessed Mrs Stewart hitting some splendid shots on the occasion of her Lady Captain’s Drive-In.

The action on the tee was interspersed with officials and invited guests taking glasses of Kir Royale with Mrs Stewart, followed by a general invitation for everyone to enjoy an excellent lunch in the clubhouse.

The Drive-In was preceded by a nine-hole fourball betterball stableford, which produced some very good scoring and was won by Julie Ettenfield and Jen Hall.

Results were:- Winners - J Ettenfield & J Hall - 22 points; runners-up - P Harrison & A Smithies - 20 points.

The men played a four-man team am-sm stableford.

This was with the exception of the second-placed team, who had to compete with only three players.

This they managed to do and achieved a quite exceptional score, although still finishing well behind the comfortable winners.

Results were: 1 G Beaumont, CMR Hall, R Turner and M Ward - 89; 2 C O’Brien, S Jex and D Wilcock - 85; 3 P Lockwood, P Ridyard, R Gannon and A M Murray - 82

BRACKEN GHYLL: On a beautiful autumn morning, with conditions as good as you could expect, there was some excellent scoring in the SCT November Medal, with the new treasurer elect Nigel Boot celebrating with a magnificent 60 nett, giving him a six-shot victory over David Blackburn, who beat David Croft on a countback, both on 66 nett.

Results: 1 Nigel Boot 79-19-60, 2 David Blackburn 88-22-66, 3 David Croft 90-24-66.

In the Herbert Walker November Stableford, playing conditions were a “bit soggy” underfoot but the greens were fine, and the scoring proved it.

In Division One, the evergreen George Burrell took the honours with a splendid 39 points. Andrew Bennett claimed second spot with 37 points, while greens’ chairman Dave Gilbert was third on 36 points.

Once again, Division Two scores raised eyebrows, with some high scoring. Leading the way was Robert Brownbridge with a brilliant handicap-demolishing 45 points.

He was four points clear of Ian Walker, who claimed second place after a countback with Charlie Cox, both returning to the podium after long spells in the wilderness with 41 points each.

Results: Division One, 1 George Burrell 39points, 2 Andrew Bennett 37pts, 3 Dave Gilbert 36pts. Division Two, 1 Robert Brownbridge 45pts, 2 Ian Walker 41pts, 3 Charlie Cox 41pts.
