by Rachel O’Connor GUISELEY AFC manager Steve Kittrick has signed up two more players as his side go into the final throes of preparation for the upcoming season.
He has added the vastly experienced Martin McIntosh to his defensive options, while up front former Stalybridge Celtic striker Nathan Joynes will battle with Adam Muller and James Walshaw for the strike roles.
All three will be competing to take over the mantle of leading scorer from James Hanson after the 21-year-old, who has topped the 20-goal mark in each of his two full seasons at Nethermoor Park, recently joined Bradford City on a two-year contract.
Hanson has been handed the No 17 shirt for his first year with the Bantams.
Guiseley boss Kittrick added McIntosh and Joynes to his other new signings Liam Needham (Gainsborough Trinity), Jon Worsnop (Bradford Park Avenue), Craig Bentham (Farsley Celtic) and Chris Holland (Fleetwood Town).
Kittrick, as well as seeking talent from outside the club, has been impressed with the form of some of the club’s own youngsters.
Young reserve team player Callum White has followed last season’s first team debutant Chris Davey into the first team squad and has impressed. Both are local lads - Davey from Guiseley and White from Menston.
On Tuesday night, Guiseley linked up with former manager Neil Parsley when they took a squad to Throstle Nest and gained a 2-1 win over the beleagured Blue Square North club.
Guiseley had a chance in the opening seconds but the ‘keeper got down well to stop a shot from Dave Merris.
With James Walshaw causing problems down the left, Guiseley pushed on but it was Farsley who opened the scoring through Dave Pickering.
Guiseley looked the livelier of the two sides and they levelled in the second-half through Adam Muller.
There were a number of second-half substitutions by both sides as the managers took a final look at some of their triallists and fringe players.
Guiseley went into the lead when centre-back James Cotterill went up and scored but they were indebted to new goalkeeper Jon Worsnop for retaining the lead for he saved a penalty late in the game after conceding it himself with a foul.
Guiseley’s new centre-back Martin McIntosh was a commanding figure in the air with good lines of communication with his teammates throughout. ,He looks as if he could forge a useful partnership with Danny Ellis.
In the second-half, triallists Lee Tuck (who has had a previous spell with Guiseley), Harpal Singh, James Nestor and Luke Malcher all had a run, along with Steve Burton, Chris Holland and Cotterill.
Guiseley’s starting line-up was: Jon Worsnop; Anthony Lloyd, Danny Ellis, Martin McIntosh, Jerome Fitzgerald; Dave Briggs, Dave Merris, Craig Bentham, James Walshaw; Adam Muller, Nathan Joynes.
On Tuesday, Guiseley will play host to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland (7.45pm) as the start of their Centenary season at Nethermoor Park kicks-off.
Bruce’s club have promised to bring a strong side to Guiseley as a favour to former Leeds United manager Gary McAllister, who arranged the game for Guiseley. McAllister is best friends with Bruce’s assistant at the Black Cats, Eric Black.
For this game admission will be £10 for adults (with a £2 discount ticket for a future UniBond game at Nethermoor); £5 concessions and children under-12 years will be allowed in free if accompanied by an adult.
The game will be sponsored by Blacks Solicitors and the match ball will be sponsored by John Adams Ltd.
In the West Riding County Cup, Guiseley have been drawn away to Tadcaster Albion in the first round. The successful club will then travel to Thackley or Ossett Town in the second round.
The remainder of the first round draw is -Askern Villa v Leeds Carnegie, Armthorpe Welfare v Ossett Albion, Harrogate Town v Goole AFC, Thackley v Ossett Town, Tadcaster Albion v Guiseley, Harrogate Railway v FC Halifax Town, Selby Town v Pontefract Collieries, Wakefield v Eccleshill United, Silsden Glasshoughton Welfare.
Guiseley open their UniBond Premier League programme at home to Matlock Town on Saturday, August 15, kick-off 3pm.
The same day the Reserves open their Lancashire League programme at Ossett Town.
