McCarthy lifts Hawksworth Trophy

MOORTOWN'S Nick McCarthy won the prestigious Hawksworth Trophy, a 36 hole strokeplay competition for the leading amateur golfers, at Bradford Golf Club, Hawksworth, on Saturday.

McCarthy, who finished with a 36 hole total of 138 had tied with Rotherham's S Maywood but won the tie break saw trophy holder Simon Bell of the Baildon club slip down to eighth place in the final rankings.

Young rising star Sam Jewell, from Menston, who plays out of the Bradford Club at Hawksworth finished in sixth place. He had his father, Derby County soccer manager Paul, acting as his caddie. Jewell, off scratch, had a 36 hole total of 145.

This exclusive event is one of 17 major events throughout the season, which constitute the Yorkshire Order of Merit. It attracts a top class field and has been a prominent feature in The Bradford Golf Club calendar for nearly 40 years.

This year's field of 64 players, with an average handicap of one, included three other past winners in England international Roger Roper and Yorkshire county players Adam Best and Richard Broadley.

First time entrant, Matthew Evans of Rotherham and Yorkshire is the lowest handicapper at plus 2.
