Brothers line up for German national team

IT is unusual for brothers to represent a national team although we have had the instances of the Charlton brothers and the Neville brothers on the international soccer scene and the Bedser twins at cricket among others.

The Keinhorst brothers can however beat all that and when youngest brother James joined his three brothers in the German national Rugby League team recently it sent people scrambling for the Guinness Book of Records. As well as there being four brothers in the team Markus and Kristian are twins.

It is most unusual if not ever heard of before for four brothers to line up in a national team and even more so when the team they are representing is not that of their homeland.

Kristian, Markus and Nicholas Keinhorst made their debuts together for the German national side in the country's first international match in Holland in 2006.

During the first Tri Nations competition the trio were acknowledged in Tallinn, Estonia, by the Estonians and given special awards.

This year a fourth brother, 17 year-old James, made his debut as a second-half substitute in the game against the Czech Republic.

Markus Keinhorst is currently the highest points scorer for the German team.

All four brothers play Rugby Union for clubs with the Otley and Old Otliensians teams. The older boys also play Rugby League with Leeds Academics and Union with Leeds Met Uni.

The 24 year-old twins Markus and Kristian are now working after finishing their studies at Leeds Met University. Nicholas, 19, is in his second year at Leeds University.

Their mother Sue said: "From Union to League the boys keep themselves fit all year round and take both disciplines very seriously. They are hugely supportive of one another and have enthusiastically developed the plans of growing the popularity of Rugby League in Germany."

All four brothers played through to the final of the Merit League as the German Exiles played St Helen's Wild Boars putting on a fantastic battle with a squad of only 14. They lost out 36-22.

The Keinhorst brothers were in the German team which won the 2006 Tri Nations tournament.

They beat Austria 34-32 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany and then beat Estonia 38-24 in Tallinn, Estonia.

This year they lost 36-6 to Serbia in Heidelberg, Germany, and then beat the Czech Republic 44-22 in Prague.

Sue added: "We are proud of the boys. Over the years they have taken lots of knocks and, probably unwisely, the boys play through some of their injuries. I am not sure I can watch them anymore, it just gets tougher."

The brothers all started out playing football, a sport their father understands best, but whilst at St Mary's School, Menston, they all switched to rugby, the twins subsequently playing for Yorkshire Schools and Yorkshire.

Nick had to delay his eagerness to play having recovered from surgery for a brain tumour and eye adjustment. Nick triumphed over adversity however and he too has played for Yorkshire.

James the youngest and smallest is however extremely resilient and he played rugby for school and had to make the decision to leave a successful time with his football club Menston Hotshots to play rugby for Otley.

He has proved his strengths in a well established team and now goes from strength to strength in a variety of positions.

The boys qualify to play for Germany as that is the homeland of their father, They responded to a request to get together with players from Heidleburg to have a look at standards with a view to broadening Rugby League into Germany and other countries that play Union but not League.

So the team was born and now it is gaining sponsors and becoming formalised.

The boys' father is thrilled at the boys representing his homeland and so are his family back home in Bochum and Dortmund.

The brothers are supporting and encouraging to newcomers and are critical of themselves. They are looking forward to more interest being shown in the game in Germany. The German Exiles would be like to hear from interested German or part German players for next season.

Awesome news for Germany Rugby League. Hope this can spread the word of the fantastic sport that it is throughout Germany and to other developing nations also.

As normal Rugby League pick players to play for a Country that they have never been to.

Rugby League is and always will be a regional sport.

Rugby League is getting more and more popular, I watched 5 minutes of the England union game on Friday but it was too slow and boring and the Wigan v Saints game made tham look like a couple of pub sides.

Like the England RU team with its unimpeachable record of pure-blood nationality you mean? Doesn't the England team currently failing to defend the RU World cup contain three Africans and a New Zealander? (Mike Catt, Matt Stevens, Simon Shaw and Perry Freshwater.) Didn't Henry Paul play for England RU despite being born in, and living in New Zealand and after playing for many years as a New Zealand RL player? Isn't one of the most historically celebrated England RU Players in fact Russian royalty, (Alexander Obolensky)? As you can see in this regard English RU's history is, indeed, whiter than white.

I, for one, heartily congratulate these four lads for their efforts to represent the land of their father - overcoming great odds in the process.

FYI the German RL National team is chiefly made up of players from Germany bolstered by players of German heritage living in Germany. There is also a development team in England called the German Exiles, made up of German players living in England or players of German Heritage living in England. Many of these players also play RU within the German set-up and RU clubs in Bavaria have, largely, supported the development of Rugby League Deutschland and domestic German RL clubs like Bad Reichenhall, Heidelberg, Munich and Frankfurt.

The German RU governing body, however, haven't been so welcoming and I, for one, think that the the people behind RLD deserve congratualtion for their hard work and dedication, not least these four lads for standing up and taking the opportunity to take part in international sport.

RLD's recent match results against the Dutch, Estonian, Serbian and Czech national sides are an excellent indicator of how far RL in Germany has come. Match highlights are on YouTube if want to see them in action.

Truth is Rugby League is so desperate to copy us they just pick 11 players at Random and call them say Portugal or Malta.

Look at our crowds unlike your excuse for a World cup what was it less than a 1000 at some games.

Face it League is finished your clubs will all be playing the Greater game Union soon that is why Farrell and Robinson switched codes.

GOOD LUCK TO THE BROTHERS.

Sorry, but that has to be the worst trolling attempt I have ever seen. Your prejudice does you no favours.

Congratulations to the Keinhorsts on their record. With more schools in Bavaria taking to Rugby League and a stronger German club set-up, the European Shield will be a strongly competitive series next year. Even if they don't beat the Czechs or the Serbians they'll still have the best looking kit in the competition. Good luck to Leo Berngruber and the lads at RL Deutschland for 2008.

England picked a 32 year old League prop at 10 :)
I would love to see Farrel return to his favourite sport but he would only be useful as a 2x20 minute prop.Does Union rules think any of the England union team are good enough for GB Rugby League? Apart from maybe Robinson and Farrel of course and that is debateable.

World in Union and there is nothing you can do.

League is a silly regional sport in decline.

Wow, if I thought this was going to be an international debate I would have asked for a set of minutes for my records. Playing both league and union I don't waste my time listening to people who criticise either sport. Everyone can do what they want to as long as they're having fun doing it. Anyone with German Heritage who is interested in playing for the German Exiles in the summer merit league please contact me on kkeinhorst@yahoo.com

Thanks

The Keinhorsts are not just good Rugby players but are good ambassadors for Rugby League and the Keinhorst family. The keinhorsts father originates from Bochum area and the boys are often there. We have used 6 players this year who have German Parentage-the rest are German born like Leo Berngruber, Moritz Hottenrott, Julian Zabel, Benedikt Rehm, Joachim Frera etc. We see no wrong in this and in Germany Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Nürnberg and Bad Reichenhall all have teams that play Rugby League. I feel sorry for the poor people who have something against League or anybodyelse and put slanderous remarks. We feel its better to put our efforts into something positive and get Rugby League played in a couple of German Schools and we have over 40 Germans that have played Rugby League in the past 2 years. Its a shame some idiots in Rugby Union as well as Rugby League seem happy causing problems or belittleing the hard work people put in both codes. Neither code is Global and likely never will be but we believe that people should just enjoy whatever code they like and if they dont like the other fair enough but there is no need to call everybody in League or Union pathetic names or criticize the work they do.

Union Rules is on the defensive which is more than the average RU player can do. I wonder why? Did you enjoy the try fest that was the RUWC final?
