Old Otliensians 20 Goole 24

NEWLY-PROMOTED Old Otliensians suffered a narrow defeat in their first Yorkshire Two encounter of the season.

The first 15 minutes were even with the home team using their impressive backs but tended to kick away possession which the visitors returned with interest.

Goole opened the scoring when they scored an unconverted try from a five-metre scrum.

A fine tackle by Will Foster snuffed out a Goole attack and gaining a penalty in the process

Will Cooper registered the home side’s first points with a penalty and they took the lead when they won the ball against the head and pushed the visitors' scrum over the line for an unconverted try by Matt Taylor.

Goole hit back right on half-time when a missed tackle led to a converted try which enabled them to go 12-8 up.

The first few minutes of the second half saw play go from end to end until an interception by Will Cooper in the home 22 saw him race 75 metres to score a great try between the posts which he also converted.

Goole exerted a spell of pressure, but fine defensive work kept them out. Paddy Phipps, Joe Armitage and Lee O’Donnell impressed with their hard work.

The visitors regained the lead with a converted try which made the score 19-15, but Otliensians soon hit back.

From a scrum near the visitors' 10 metre line the ball was moved out to stand off Will Cooper,

Olly Eaves made a half break before Cooper looped round to create the overlap for Ali Booth who screamed down the wing to score in the corner.

Otliensians were scenting victory but it was not to be. Goole came back into the home 22

and scored wide out the conversion hitting the upright.

This gave them a 24-20 victory while the home team was left with a losing bonus point.
