GUISELEY joint-manager Russ O'Neill is targeting a hat-trick of Football League scalps tonight when his side host Leeds United.

The Lions followed up a 2-1 win over Bradford City with an impressive 3-1 victory over Championship side Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Now they look to continue this rich vein of friendly form with success over Marcelo Bielsa's men (7.45pm kick-off). This is before a further Yorkshire derby friendly clash when League One outfit Barnsley come to Nethermoor on Tuesday, July 31 (7.45pm).

The Bolton result saw Guiseley bounce back following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Gateshead on Saturday.

But O'Neill was full of praise for his side following the triumph over Phil Parkinson's charges, adding that anything is achievable if they continue to instil a winning mentality.

He said: "We were over the moon with the Bolton result.

"On Saturday, we were a bit disappointed to come out on the wrong end of the result.

"Against Gateshead, we did well for 70 minutes and had a poor 15-minute spell.

"We asked for a reaction on Tuesday night and explained it to them and I thought they were excellent.

"I don't want to go singling anyone out for our performance against Bolton. It was a good group effort.

"Our defence looked like they were comfortable against Bolton and we put pressure on their back four. From back to front we were excellent."

Meanwhile, Parkinson played down Bolton's defeat, but praised Guiseley's display.

He said: “We started slowly, kicking up the slope, and conceded two goals.

“They are a big, strong, physical team – typical Conference North – with power at the top of the pitch, and they gave us problems. But it was a game I wanted to get more minutes into players, and we did that.

“Every pre-season you’ll get a result like this. We want to win every game but it was a decent workout because they really wanted to win it too. It was competitive.

“I said at half time that if you start slowly at any level of football and play square balls across your penalty area, you will put yourself under pressure.

“We played three of them, and the third resulted in Guiseley scoring a goal. That’s what happens when you put the ball at risk.

“Guiseley stepped on to us and closed down, so credit to them.”

O'Neill added he was impressed by the way his side kept Bolton's strikers, including former Newcastle United man Sammy Ameobi. But he said it was more important Guiseley got more game time under their belts ahead of their opening Vanarama North clash at Boston United on Saturday, August 4.

He said: "It will be another tough game tonight. We have got more minutes in the bank and we will try to win that one as well. It was an excellent experience for the lads.

"Ultimately, it's about growing as a team and a squad through pre-season. It's about the mentality and getting it together.

"Saturday, we were really disappointed with the result against us.

"The emphasis is now on the next few games and getting the mentality right for August 4. We have proved tonight against Bolton that anything is achievable."
