LEE Elam had the honour of captaining England Veterans yesterday in their World Cup clash against Taiwan and he marked their 4-1 win in style, with a spectacular diving header after a fine Peter Beagrie cross from the left.

The former Guiseley player is enjoying a fine year in Veterans football, as he also achieved great success with Bradford City Veterans, helping them to win the 2018 Algarve Veterans Tournament.

England are represented at the Seniors World Cup in Thailand by Harrogate Veterans, and there is a strong West Yorkshire presence in the side.

Their assistant manager is Mark Smitheringale from Ilkley, while former Guiseley goalkeeping stalwart Steve Dickinson plays for the side, and he was denied a clean sheet against yesterday's opposition, with Taiwan scoring a late consolation.

That goal was academic, as England showed their class early on. Barry Hayles opened the scoring, before Beagrie converted from the spot.

After Elam's fine finish, England completed their scoring with a late goal from Rod Thornley and having already beaten Scotland in the opening game, yesterday's victory means that England have safely qualified from their group.

They wrapped up proceedings by beating New Zealand 2-1 in their final group match this morning. A report will follow later.
