Yorkshire Division Two: Old Grovians 48 Sheffield Medicals 21

APART from a mad 15 minutes, Old Grovians played a mature game, showing calmness in defence when their opponents were making ground through well-drilled phases, and the hosts also profited on the counter-attack via patient handling and support play.

The first of eight tries came within five minutes as Danny Secker broke  through in the centre, making 20 yards before offloading to Anthony Griffin, who interchanged passes with Paddy Burns on his outside before scoring himself for Ben Brown to convert.

A few minutes later, the influential Secker benefited from a dominant scrum to score a try at bthe second attempt, with his first effort being ruled held up.

Another Secker break put Burns over for the third try, Brown's conversion making it 19-0.

Despite Brown missing a penalty early in the second half, penetrating carries from Jack Hartley, Lewis Brook, Elliot Cosgrove and Matthew Worrall gave Grovians grounds for optimism, although the visitors' defence held firm.

Then, from a scrum on halfway, Griffin weaved his way over for the bonus-point try, which Brown converted.

Two minutes later, the backs again made good use of the forwards' good work for Johnathan Gilbert to get the fifth try after good work by Worrall and Griffin.

From the restart, Sheffield tried to work the ball upfield but a missed pass was pounced on by Burns, who hacked the ball to ther try-line and fell on it to make the score 36-0.

Partially due to changes being made due to injuries, Grovians were on the back foot for 15 minutes, with the visitors scoring two converted tries in quick succession.

Grovians hit back with a good individual try by Cosgrove which Brown converted and, although Sheffield got another converted try, Gilbert bagged the final try after Brook had gone close.
