Pool 2 Wetherby Athletic 1

POOL were made to work hard for their Premier Division win by a young Wetherby side that side belied their position at the foot of the table with a spirited display.

The home side had the early chances, one in particular being missed from no more than a yard out.

Wetherby weathered the storm and took the game to Pool and might have gained some reward with steadier finishing.

It eventually took an uncharacteristic error from Pool keeper Andy Doey to break the deadlock. He failed to hang on after making an initial good block and a Wetherby forward pounced to score.

The second half was good end to end football with both sides having chances. Pool manager Paul Newsome made some important substitutions which had immediate effect.

Debutant Scott Cater showed his speed to give the Wetherby defence all sorts of problems, and Matthew Bilney, back from injury, crowned his comeback with the equaliser.

There was some controversy late in the game as Pool hammered the Wetherby defence, hitting the crossbar, forcing several goalline clearances, and bringing a superb save from the Wetherby keeper.

With the Wetherby management screaming for the final whistle, Pool forced a string of corners. James Carroll connected with a powerful header which gave the keeper no chance in the 96th minute.
