Yarnbury 10 Hullensians 20

YARNBURY'S promising young players looked like providing the lowly Yorkshire One team with a much-needed win until their brave effort faded out in the closing minutes.

This was the sort of response coach Bob Hood was looking for after the humiliating defeat by West Leeds a week earlier.

With the majority of the club's experienced forwards absent through injury the youngsters showed admirable effort and endeavour in a close-fought game.

Back rows Russ Gomersall and Adam Batson formed an unlikely second row pairing while inexperienced Calum Fawcett came in as open side flanker alongside Rhys Leighton at and Kieran Lines in the the back row.

Yarnbury were lucky to have returning back row Joe Bennett on the bench for his experience as he was called into action from the kick off with an injury to the ball carrier Leighton from the start.

Hullensians were camped in the home side’s territory in the early minutes and scored under the posts after concerted pressure through prop Brian Barron. Clayton McLeod converted to give Hullensians an early 7-0 lead .

Yarnbury were looking dangerous with the ball in hand but saw little possession early on.When they did the final ball was either rushed or penalty advantage was lost at the line-out or kicked dead.

It seemed that Hull were destined to get to the break in the lead and this was confirmed when full back Danny Pound missed two penalty kicks when try opportunities were spurned.

Yarnbury got off to a good start in the second half with an early penalty from Pound for Hull handling in the ruck.

With the makeshift pack looking impressive in the scrums the backs were supplied with stable possession.

The young wing forwards Fawcett and Lines got through their share of tackles on the big Hull forwards.

The pressure was constant from the Horsforth side as they took control of the game in the third quarter and battered the Hull try line to no avail.

Even when they thought a try would be given the referee Mark Dickenson, who had a good game, ruled the player was held up.

Not to be denied, the Horsforth side swept the ball to the right and the final pass finally stuck for winger Alex Clark to score a try which Pound converted to give Yarnbury the lead.

All they had to do was keep the ball tight but when it was spilled out wide the Hullensians wing forward Oli Dynan seized on the loose ball to race away unopposed for a devastating try.

The Yarnbury effort was still there right to the finish but Hull scored late on down the left to increase their lead when winger Josh Langford got over in the corner.

Hullensians rounded off the scoring when stand-off Calum McLeod converted a penalty to close out the game. It also ensured there was no losing bonus point for Yarnbury which was harsh after their brave performance.
