Yarnbury 8 West Leeds 58

THIS was a day to forget for Yarnbury as they suffered a resounding defeat on their own Brownberrie Lane pitch.

On a day when they managed to field five teams despite having 50 players unavailable across the club, the first team was shorn of experienced personnel.

Yarnbury’s cause wasn’t helped by a series of dropped passes which hampered their at-tempts to make an impact.

The Yarnbury defence was holding well for the first quarter before pressure at the scrum gave the opponents back row James Salter the chance to crash over under the posts and Kier Brakewell added the extras.

Yarnbury spilled further attacking ball before they opened up the West Leeds defence with pace and good handling on the half-hour mark.

Quick inter passing came off to create space out wide left which gave winger Alex Clark a run in. The conversion was missed by full back Will Marshall but Yarnbury were in the game and competing for the points.

Unfortunately, the final 15 minutes of the half were all West Leeds with their captain and centre Sam Nieve ‘bobbing and weaving’ out of tackles to score a brace of tries

Brakewell landed one of the conversions while Marshall missed a penalty for Yarnbury.

The second half was a disaster for Yarnbury as they failed to made no impression with the ball.

Good breaks from second row James Falgate and full back Marshall came to nothing when the ball was spilled in the tackle.

In contrast, West Leeds counter attacked clinically as they ran in a steady stream of tries.

Yarnbury missed the influential second row Ian Maycock out with a virus and strong running Tom Holden in the back row who is out until the New Year like influential captain Jimmy Cryan.

Russell Gomersall made a big effort in the second row filling in for absentees in a difficult position and new scrum half Matty Morgan who came on in the second half and tried to take the game to the opposition.

This was a watershed in the 20-year career of Yarnbury coach Bob Hood who will have to put together a team to compete for the rest 2016.
