Old Modernians 6 Aireborough 11

A much-changed Aire side, including Matthew Osborn who was making his first appearance for nearly two years following a leg break, made the short journey South to face Old Modernians looking to bounce back from thedisappointing performance and result against Castleford. last

The match was a physical affair and the Aireborough medic, Heidi Reynolds, was soon called upon as Aire lost Jonny Mackey and James Underwood to injury in the first ten minutes.

Successful penalties were exchanged between the sides before Aire used the slope of the pitch to good effect and began applying sustained pressure to the Mods line, eventually scoring an unconverted try through hooker Nick Jackson.

Despite dominating the first half and creating a number of gilt-edged chances, Aireborough were unable to extend their lead and were made to pay for their profligacy when Old Mod’s reduce the deficit with another penalty to leave Aire just 11-6 up at the break.

The second half was no less physical and Old Mods, with the slope, lay siege to the Aireborough line for the first 20 minutes.

Unlike last week against Castleford, Aireborough stood tall to the test and refused to be beaten and bullied by a larger side and Old Mods were unable to add to their score.

Buoyed by this resolute defence, Aireborough gained more territory and possession as the half wore on but were again wasteful when the opportunity arose to extend their lead.

The second half remained scoreless and Aireborough returned to winning ways in the league with an 11-6 victory.
