Guiseley winger Luke Porritt insists his rock-bottom side can still beat the drop as they prepare for Saturday’s trip to Sutton United.

The Lions remain rooted to the foot of the Vanarama National League after failing to win any of their first 12 games.

Last weekend’s 2-1 home loss to Macclesfield continued their woes in the first match since Adam Lockwood was confirmed as permanent manager and Dave Penney arrived as his assistant.

Yet Porritt is confident the tide will soon turn and said: “Locky has already brought some new things into training and Dave will be able to give the lads some valuable advice as well.

“We can go from there and hopefully start getting some results.

“Having Dave here can only help us – it has to – and you can just tell what he's all about when you speak to him.

“He will only bring something good to the club and everyone understands him because he's so experienced.

“Overall, he will benefit us as a club and I'm sure he will work well with Locky and with the boys.”

Lockwood and Penney held a lengthy inquest into last Saturday’s loss to Macclesfield and the pair must now seek to rouse their troops for the long trip to Sutton.

Porritt revealed: “Locky didn't have a go at us, he just asked what we thought of the game.

“Some lads have obviously said what they think and, I know we keep saying it, but this week is a fresh week and we need to see what we could do from here.

“We keep saying it's a must-win game so we need to go to Sutton United, keep a clean sheet and try and nick a draw or a win.

“It doesn't always have to be lovely football .Like the lads were saying after Saturday's game, if we win ugly then we win ugly.

“That's what we need to do because we are here to win football matches and stay up.

“We need to move up the table and the belief is still there.

“Some of the lads have been in this position before and we are trying to stick together.

“It is hard because the mood is down but we are boosting each other and I think we can definitely stay up.”

Porritt has made five appearances this season but started only once.

The 20-year-old impressed off the bench against Macclesfield and is now hoping for a starting berth at Sutton.

Porritt said: “I don't mind coming off the bench, as long as I'm involved in the team.

“When you come on, you've got to give your all and it was 2-1 at that point.

“We didn't have a great deal to lose against Macclesfield and we had a go at them, but it obviously wasn't our day.

“Locky has had some trust in me in starting me before and bringing me off the bench.

“If I start or come off the bench, I'll give my all and that will never change.”
