North Ferriby United 3, Guiseley 2

Guiseley are still looking for their first point of the season after a first-half defensive horror show ultimately cost them dear.

North Ferriby United secured their first victory in the National League at the Eon Visual Media Stadium but it was another tale of woe for the Lions.

Mark Bower’s men fought back valiantly from 2-0 down to level the scores late on courtesy of Oli Johnson’s second goal of the game.

But Simon Russell's fortuitous late strike settled matters and left Lions boss Bower bitterly frustrated.

The hosts took a ninth minute lead through the livewire Ryan Kendall.

Neat footwork from Curtis Bateson saw a ball into the box smashed home by the Villagers forward.

Ferriby were in dreamland when Danny Emerton doubled their lead midway through the first half.

Guiseley's Jake Lawlor failed to clear the danger and Emerton pounced.

Johnson kept the visitors in the game with a goal on the half-hour mark, after linking up well with Jordan Preston.

In the second half, Guiseley piled on the pressure and Ferriby cracked, with Johnson scoring his second in the 84th minute.

But there was time for Russell to net the winner for Ferriby, as Guiseley's Marcus Williams' clearance deflected off the Villagers' man for the 3-2 success.

Bower said: “In terms of the performance and the effort that the players put in and their endeavour, we certainly got a response after a flat performance against Dagenham on Saturday.

“But two moments in the first half, and obviously the third one, cost us the game.

“At this level, you've got to be switched on for 90 minutes because it just takes a second to score a goal.”
