Yarnbury 25 Selby 18

YARNBURY guaranteed their place in Yorkshire One next season with victory over a Selby scrapping to beat the drop.

The influential No 8 Jimmy Cryan missed the match but the Horsforth side were boosted by the return of top try scorer Ellis Gomersall.

Yarnbury squandered an early chance to open the scoring when they opted to kick a penalty to touch rather than go for goal. They lost the resulting line-out and missed the chance to pressure the Selby line.

Another lost line-out saw Yarnbury squander another good position before stand off Kieran Davies opened the scoring with a penalty.

Selby's stubborn resistance was broken down on the half hour when scrum half Nathan Benton chipped the ball over the defence and stand off Kieran Davies ran in the first try which he also converted.

Yarnbury were dominating the play and when they moved the ball wide they created a second try for winger Alex Clark to establish a 15-0 lead.

Immediately from the restart Yarnbury allowed Selby to reduce the arrears with a penalty from their stand off Scott Hunt for holding on to the ball on the floor.

Yarnbury missed a kickable penalty soon after for a similar offence and then spurned several good try scoring opportunities through dropped passes.

It took Yarnbury until the final quarter to extend their lead with a long-range penalty from Davies.

Selby were applying pressure through their forwards and prop Duncan Hardy scored a try from a rolling maul after a succession of penalties.

Yarnbury replied by using their backs to stretch the Selby defence once again.Hooker Tom Gilchrist was hauled down inches short of the line.

Yarnbury finally put the game to bed 12 minutes from time. Another backs move and quick recycling saw centre Jason Avison score his side's third try. Davies added the conversion.

Selby clawed back two tries in added time from hooker Mark Tanner and centre Alex Hare to take a point in defeat which could help them to avoid the drop to the second tier of Yorkshire Rugby.
