Guiseley boss Mark Bower is eyeing another huge step towards safety when his side head to Macclesfield on Saturday.

The Lions ended an 11-match winless streak in the Vanarama National League when they thrashed Wrexham 3-1 at Nethermoor on Tuesday.

The result lifted Bower’s men five points clear of the relegation zone with three matches remaining.

Victory at Moss Rose this weekend, coupled with results elsewhere going in their favour, could see Guiseley safe by Saturday teatime.

Bower said: “We’re five points clear of the bottom four now but it’s not enough yet.

“We’ve got a job to do at Macclesfield on Saturday and if we can get a result there then we can keep that bigger or make it even bigger.

“With only a couple of games left after that, it might be enough.

“It’s a challenge for the lads – let’s go to Macclesfield and try and win the game.

“If we do that, we can see how the other results have gone and it might be enough to see us safe.

“But until it’s done and dusted we will keep on going. We’re back in training on Thursday and will look after everyone who has picked up knocks before going again on Saturday.

“We will look to give a good account of ourselves, as we have most of the time over these past 11 games.”

Bower believes the win over Wrexham was his side’s best display of the season and will pour confidence into them for their remaining three games.

The former Bradford City defender added: “Confidence is such a massive thing.

“When you see a top player in the Premier League who is struggling for confidence, then he will look like he should be playing at this level.

“It’s such a big thing and the lads can take a lot of heart from beating Wrexham, not just the win but the way they won as well.”

The Lions raced into a 3-0 lead at half-time as Oli Johnson rifled in before Adam Boyes struck twice.

Sean Newton's second half close-range finish pulled a goal back for Wrexham but the result left Guiseley in 18th.

Bower said: “Without doubt, it was one of the best performances of the season.”
