Yarnbury 29 Scarborough 29

by John Rawson

THE return of a number of experienced players helped Yarnbury pick up a draw in their bid to secure their place in Yorkshire One.

With the half-back pairing of captain Oliver Cashman and Carl Paterson pulling the strings, Yarnbury played with considerable calmness.

The pack looked stronger with lock James Falgate and flanker Tom Holden back as Yarnbury took the game to their rivals.

They squandered two chances with driving mauls before a miss pass from Paterson put full back Kieran Davies into space.

He drew the cover before putting winger Ellis Gomersall in for a try at the corner. Unfortunately, he was injured while in the act of scoring and had to leave the field.

Davies missed the long conversion but made amends when second row Ian Maycock went over for a try.

Yarnbury had a 12-0 lead but Scarborough were by no means out of the contest and responded with a try from back row Ben Martin.

The seasiders scored a second try soon after when the ball was knocked out of Jimmy Cryan’s hands and Scarborough took advantage as hooker Mark Hooper touched down.

Yarnbury fell behind just before the break when Scarborough opted to run the ball out of defence. Scarborough captain Tom Chadwick scored in the corner.

Yarnbury regained the lead early in the second half when full back Davies scored after a neat interchange with Stuart Wilson. Davies’ conversion attempt hit a post.

Play was switching from end to end and it came as no surprise when the lead swapped hands. A break by Scarborough stand off Tom Chadwick put in wing forward Dru Grothier for the bonus-point try which Chadwick converted.

Yarnbury response was a second try from Maycock after he collected a pass out wide and powered to the line. The successful conversion by Davies gave the home side a two-point lead.

The advantage was extended to seven points when right wing replacement Lee Mortimer outflanked the defence after Davies came into the line to create the overlap.

Scarborough simply refused to throw in the towel and forced the draw when Radcliffe added the conversion to a Grothier try.
