National League Two North: Otley 25, Sedgley Park 28

Two in-form sides provided a feast of rugby in front of the day’s guest of honour, former Otley scrum half and England skipper Nigel Melville, who is chief executive of Rugby USA.

The lead changed hands regularly in this National League Two North encounter and there was a nail-biting finish.

Otley had seemingly made the game safe with a penalty in the 81st minute to extend their lead but it gave Sedgley Park a chance to get into the home half and they responded in style with a score in the final minute as befits the leaders.

The home side have been making a habit of early scores, and once again they were ahead in a couple of minutes, their kick-off not being cleanly taken but fly- hacked downfield, where it was secured before Park were caught offside.

The penalty setting up an attacking line-out, where the ball was moved to the opposite wing for Henry Roberts to touch down, scrum half Stephen Depledge converting.

Otley continued to have the edge in play but, on 25 minutes, Park scrum half Callum McShane broke from the base of a maul to put winger Jamie Harrison over, fly half Stephen Collins converting, and seven minutes later the two combined to put the visitors ahead.

Despite having had to rearrange their back line yet again after James White and Sam Allan were injured at Huddersfield, Otley were working well together and, six  minutes into the second half, following forward pressure, Roberts was in for his second try, Depledge levelling with the conversion.

However, Park edged ahead once more when Otley fly half Neil Chivers found himself short of support having taken a tap penalty, a turnover letting centre Matthew Riley in for a try, converted by Collins.

Responding quickly, Depledge kicked a penalty and replacement prop Charles Capps crashed over for the lead to change again, Depledge adding to it on 81 minutes with a simple penalty.

However, then came the latest of twists, Park securing their re-start, Riley going in under the posts, the final whistle following the conversion.
