West Park Leeds 11 Yarnbury 18

YARNBURY overcame a slow start to defeat their local rivals and register their first Yorkshire One win of the season at The Sycamore.

hey conceded two early penalties for offences at the breakdown which were comfortably converted by centre Martin Cromack as West Park established a 6-0 lead.

Yarnbury gradually worked their way into the game and opened their account after referee Glen Cockcroft awarded them a penalty.

Paterson kicked deep for touch and after the customary catch and drive was repelled by the Park pack, Yarnbury moved the ball wide and young centre Tom Fowler stretched for the line for the try. Paterson converted to pout his side ahead.

The lead lasted just seven minutes. A missed kick to touch was punished as Park worked the blind side and forward Jack Rowan went in for an unconverted try which put his side 11-7 up.

Yarnbury responded with the best move of the match. After winning good line-out possession through Ian Maycock the ball was moved wide for winger Ellis Gomersall to dive low to beat the cover as he scored in the corner.

Paterson was unlucky with the touchline conversion which bounced back off the nearside post.

Yarnbury were back in the lead and increased it from another Paterson penalty close in due to persistent infringements from the West Park pack.

The second half was really a war of attrition with Yarnbury having most of the possession up the hill with Paterson pushing the home side back into the corners with his pin-point kicking.

The Yarnbury backs tackled well and managed to stifle West Park. There was one scare for Yarnbury when winger Gomersall had to use his speed to bring down Park winger Dan Walker just short of the line.

Replacement forward Dom Goldthorpe was given valuable game time in the last 20 minutes while Steve Riley took over from Paterson and struck a long penalty over off the crossbar to complete the scoring.
