GUISELEY’S pre-season started with a 3-1 home defeat against Championship neighbours Huddersfield Town at Nethermoor.

Former Bantams striker Nahki Wells opened the scoring for the visitors while his old Bradford City colleague Andy Gray, playing as a trialist for the Lions, showed all of his guile and class.

The first half hour remained goalless but Wells netted with a left-foot shot from inside the area after Duane Holmes had picked him out. Midfielder Jacob Butterfield drilled in the second from a tight angle.

Guiseley did peg a goal back before the break after one of Town’s trialists, former Barnsley player Martin Cranie, fouled Luke Porritt in the area. Nicky Boshell sent Terriers’ keeper Alex Smithes the wrong way from the spot.

Second-half substitute Joe Lolley made it 3-1 with a well-struck shot from just outside the area, after a good run in the 89th minute.

Lions boss Mark Bower said: "I thought we did well considering we were playing against top opposition.

"We had a couple of trialists that dropped out just hours before the game so we had to play Luke Porritt and Jordan Hendrie for the full 90 minutes. That wasn't what we wanted at this stage of pre-season but they are young lads and can cope with it.

"Andy (Gray) was on the pitch as a lone striker and he played well, I could hear him moving people about and using his experience, there were good signs from him. We are not going into it (National League) to be pushovers."
