ANDY Gray will feature for Guiseley in their opening pre-season friendly against Huddersfield on Saturday as he bids to press his claims for a contract.

The much-travelled veteran striker, 37, has joined the newly-promoted Lions on trial and boss Mark Bower has confirmed he will play some part against the Terriers.

Harrogate-born Gray, whose father Frank and legendary uncle Eddie played for Leeds United, began his career at Elland Road and played for Bradford City, Sheffield United, Sunderland, Burnley and Charlton.

He returned to Leeds for a second spell in 2012-13 before heading back to Valley Parade the following season.

The former Scotland international, who lives locally, has been out of the game since but remains in excellent physical condition.

Bower, who played with Gray during the forward’s first spell at Bradford, said: “We will see how Andy gets through the first couple of friendlies and take it from there.

“He has done all the training with the lads and is an example of how to look after yourself because he is incredibly fit.

“Andy has had some good moves throughout his career and scored goals wherever he has been, so hopefully we can utilise that quality in the future.

“We’ve just got to see how he is after quite a long spell out of the game and how he feels in himself.

“I don’t think he’s played at all since leaving Bradford so it’s a casual agreement at the moment but he’s certainly here for a reason.”

After Huddersfield’s visit on Saturday (3pm kick-off), Guiseley welcome Barnsley to Nethermoor on Tuesday (7pm kick-off) with Gray set to feature in both games.

Bower added: “Everyone will get a run-out with the exception of Ben Parker, who is coming back from injury, and we will probably have a couple of trialists involved and one or two of our promising young academy players.

“We won’t be over-exerting players as it’s our first game back and Huddersfield will be a big test for us.

“They finished comfortably in mid-table in the Championship last season and, while you always want to win every game, we will look after our players.”

Bower, meanwhile, has applauded Bradford City’s success in reaching 18,000 season-ticket holders at discounted prices.

He said: “It’s fantastic move by City and I’d be amazed if more clubs don’t follow that lead.

“Hopefully we can get a few of them down to Nethermoor when City are playing away.”
